I remember this like it was yesterday!
I remember wanting to get a good guitar – not just any guitar – a really good guitar and I had my eye on a 76 Les Paul – Wine Red!
There was NO way to get that guitar but to get a job – making minimum wage – and that was the LAST time I would ever have to do that! But I had to work from 4:00 to 10:0o p.m. 3 nights week and from 4:00 to like 3:00 a.m. at a place that was GREASY to say the least – in fact, I kept my “branded” apron I had to wear – as that job was HUMILIATING! But I was just old enough to drive but NOT really old enough to work – but I would do ANYTHING for that Guitar – and I finally bought it – within 6 months – my first Band “FOREVER” was formed and we had our FIRST GIG – Sat Sept 22, 1977 – and we made MORE MONEY then – than most bands out there are making per night and that’s a LONG TIME AGO – that was it – I was HOOKED and I never went back…
I was me, Kevin Ivey on Guitar, Andy Gehman on Guitar, Sid Powers on Drums, Doug Craft on Bass and Frank Lacy on Keys – well a synth that he had built from Scratch – not much of a light show – but I had a MILK CARTON with a strobe underneath it – so I could stand up on it and play lead! Kind of funny in retrospect but I l0ved every minute of it – and to think we made MORE in that one night than we could have made in WEEKS of working a BS JOB – that was all I needed – wasn’t long after that – that I started to play Country Clubs and then went off to college – only to come back to OPEN for Paul Davis at our largest Theater in my home town – so those HOURS of practice paid off! –
It’s a shame that cover charge hasn’t changed since then – so needless to say starting out now it harder than it was back then – but still to me – it was ALL WORTH THE JOURNEY!
